About Joe

I offer personal coaching in maths, chemistry, biology and physics.

I enjoy working with students to GCSE and A level, to help them get the very best out of their maths and science learning, to enhance their understanding and reach their full potential in exams.

Studying chemistry to degree level? I also cover the undergraduate organic chemistry syllabus.

What parents say

‘My son really enjoyed Joe’s approach and was always very happy to attend his tutoring sessions. (…) We will be rebooking with Joe for our other child.’
Rachel B.

‘My eldest son has just finished his GCSEs. When he started tuition [a year ago], Chemistry was one of his weaker subjects, but Joe’s patient and supportive teaching style has meant that he has come on leaps and bounds and he felt confident after his real exams.’
Willa F.

My route to PhD

I loved maths and science at my state secondary school. I was lucky to get great coaching in maths and science in the run-up to GCSEs, to supplement my school lessons. So I know what a difference coaching can make to your understanding and your approach to a subject. And to those crucial GCSE and A level results!

Those one-to-one sessions with great tutors really gave me a deeper understanding of the subjects and encouraged a curiosity that’s still there 15 years later.

I did a four-year integrated undergraduate and master’s degree in Chemistry (BSc and MSci) at UCL (University College London). During my third year, I had my first taste of research chemistry in a lab at Imperial College London – exploring new chemical reactions. Where an outcome looked interesting, the aim was to develop the process to get to the point where the reaction worked predictably. It was fascinating and inspiring.

I was invited to do my doctorate in Chemistry at Imperial, working with Professor James Bull. My PhD thesis Copper mediated oxidative C–H sulfonylation of aldehydes and amines: a study of reactivity and mechanism (Joe Higham 2022) was very well received. I’ve also co-authored a number of scientific papers. You can read more about my research here.

After my PhD I was a post-doc researcher in electrochemistry, working with Dr Kevin Lam at the University of Greenwich.
